Book In the Solace (Metahuman Files Book 6) Review :

What's important to know about this book first and foremost is that it was a surprise. Hailey Turner created an extremely interesting and well-plotted world in her "Metahuman Files" series; the characters are deeply endearing and the world-building is phenomenally well-done, a blend of 'X-Men' with 'Political Animals' with the sort of familiar-yet-unfamiliar in 'Firefly & Serenity' -- as Stephenie Meyer once described her novel 'The Host', the "Metahuman Files" work as sci-fi for people who don't really like sci-fi. You recognize and understand this world with it's new bells and whistles, and it makes immersion very easy. Alongside three short stories and three fuller novellas, 'The Metahuman Files' concluded in book five, "In the Requiem", with an explosive climax. This book, which is now billed as the final entry in the series, picks up where "In the Requiem" left off to focus on fan-favorite side character British Colonel Liam Wessex, the 13th in line for the throne Prince of England, and to tie up two burning loose ends: Jamie and Kyle's long-awaited nuptials, and taking down the last piece of the Pavluhkin conspiracy, the treacherous ex-CIA director Carter Bennett. Picking up from the previously released novella "Fire in the Heart", where we were introduced to Liam's intriguingly caustic liaison with British MI6 Oliver Archer in a failed attempt to bring Bennett to justice, "Solace" begins with the long-awaited wedding. The wedding and resulting honeymoon were everything fans could have possibly wanted/been waiting for for this beleaguered couple. We've never gotten to actually see from Liam's POV, so that was a new and refreshing twist. From there, the action heads to England, where the secondary plot of Bennett, the Reborn IRA and other terrorist groups are vulturing around the remnants of the Splice terrorist attacks and conspiracies from the rest of the series. It's exciting, it's gut-wrenching, and we get a lot of action and breathtaking thrills. Here is also, however, where we run into one big problem with this book.A previous novella, titled "New Horizons", gave us our first peek at life post-Alpha Team for our favorite heroes, and showed Trevor Sanchez find his own HEA with a cute and brave medic named Brendan. It was fun, but, as 'novella' indicates, it was also.....short. The story that occurred needed time and space with which to build, and so even though it is nice that the proceeding novella and this novel continued to mention that Trevor and Brendan are still together, it's not as satisfying frankly because they didn't get a full book. This is the crux of the one issue I had with "In the Solace" - it feels like part two of a book that we were never privy to in regards to Liam and Oliver.Make no mistake!! Oliver is a *wonderful* character; he's one of the only fully human agents we've worked with in these novels so far, but keeps up with his enhanced teammates to a tenacious degree; he's witty, bitingly sarcastic, and instantly endearing. I bought how he and Liam came together, and there's a few twists there that have your heart pounding via obstacles this new couple has to overcome that I won't spoil here. There is, however, a *ton* of history between these two that does not get fully fleshed out nor satisfyingly overcome due simply to the length of the novel and that these two had to share screen-time, so to speak, with Jamie and Kyle and Katie and the others. It's incredibly interesting history and has room for a *lot* of drama, but we don't ever get to see it.Liam continues to be a very likable man with enough similarities to Jamie that he's instantly understandable, but he does actually stand on his own two feet as a character so anyone worried that he's a carbon-copy shouldn't feel like that. Liam has his own issues and the powerlessness he feels at societal expectations is understandable and is something the actual royal family has had issue with since any of them tried to join active service -- de-powered or not, the symbol of royalty is a very tempting target and being active in a military field could put one's team at risk. Liam wants to serve so very badly, and it certainly wasn't his choice to be 'outed' as a metahuman in the previous novel, so there's a lot of tension going on there. His feelings for Oliver and the tension between them amidst this is fantastic, and they are very well-matched.Ultimately, "In the Solace" is a very good read, and it was lovely getting to jump back into the world of the metahumans. Jamie and Kyle's wedding made me tear up, and there's a lot of closure for loose ends to be provided in this book. I will, however, admit that I was fiercely unsatisfied with the brevity of the Oliver/Liam plot -- I wanted more, and it felt as if it was owed more time and space than it received. So, on the off-chance that you're reading this, Ms. Turner, please please please reward us with one more novella for these two; they really deserve it.(In related news, I highly recommend Turner's "Soulbound" urban fantasy series; they're fantastic and just as well-written as "The Metahuman Files" with two main characters that are only enhanced by the zany cast of side-characters they're surrounded with, just like the metahumans; if you've not tried them yet, you're missing out!)
Oh my freaking goodness! The author decided to surprise readers with this book and it is so worth the wait and the expectation. We get time with the series first couple, Jamie and Kyle, as well as seeing a new couple in Liam and Oliver. You guys, the Honeymoon scene is fantastic. It is so Jamie and Kyle and extremely hot. These two have been heating things up since their first encounter and they don't disappoint here.We get to head to London and explore Liam's world. I am so happy that we get to see more of his life and the challenges that he is having. Oliver is a good counter point for Liam and shows us how much Liam has changed from who he use to be when he was younger.A lot of action happens in this story and our guys are always in the thick of things. So much happens to them and I don't want to give anything away. I feel like your only disappointment is that this is it for the series. I'm holding out hope that we will get another short story or more later on down the road.If you love action, military, snark, laughter, romance and hot times then you need to read this series and this book. You need to read the series in order. Not a standalone.
